1. Who should use earthlife™ products?

earthlife™ products are the choice of professionals since 1990, and are used by landscapers, garden centers, topsoil producers, earthwork contractors, lawn care professionals, golf courses, athletic field managers, container and field growers, sod growers, farmers and homeowners.

2. What is earthlife™ compost?

earthlife™ compost is the product resulting from the controlled biological decomposition of organic material that has been stabilized through the generation of heat and finished to the point it is beneficial for plant growth. Our compost has been formulated to optimize nutrient content, maximize water-holding capacity and enhance soil and plant life with beneficial soil microbes. Since 1990, we have sold more than 1.3 million cubic throughout the Northeast.Please refer to the product section for more information.

3. Describe the earthlife™ composting process

New England Organics distributes from seven production facilities located throughout the Northeast. Our largest compost operation, Hawk Ridge Compost Facility, Unity, ME is the longest running and most successful compost operation in New England. This facility uses patented composting technology from Holland (Gicom Dutch Tunnel) to ensure the composting process, including oxygen, moisture, and temperature levels are maintained to ideal conditions.

The entire composting process involves three distinct phases

  1. active compost phase
  2. aerated curing phase
  3. a finishing phase

Each phase is monitored and managed to produce consistent, high quality compost.

4. What should I look for in a compost?

Determining which compost to use can involve many factors. To simplify compost selection, we recommend the following physical, chemical and biological properties be considered

  • moisture content
  • particle size
  • pH
  • % organic matter
  • weed seed content
  • nutrient levels
  • carbon to nitrogen ratio
  • conductivity
  • respiration rate
  • growth assay and density per cubic yard

Yes, New England Organics staff will provide on-site technical assistance regarding application rates, meeting organic matter and soil specifications, and complete soil sampling and testing on commercial landscape projects where earthlife™ products are used.

9. How much compost do I need?

For estimating volume needed, follow the guidelines below-

  • 34 cubic yards will cover one acre 1/4” deep
  • 67 cubic yards will cover one acre 1/2” deep
  • 134 cubic yards will cover one acre 1" deep
  • 201 cubic yards will cover one acre 1 1/4” deep
  • 269 cubic yards will cover one acre 2” deep
  • 335 cubic yards will cover one acre 2 1/4” deep
  • 402 cubic yards will cover one acre 3” deep
