Since 1994, the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s (MWRA) sludge dewatering and drying facility in Quincy, MA has pelletized the wastewater residuals generated from the 42 communities that make up greater Boston with the help of the New England Fertilizer Company (NEFCo). These pellets, suitable for agricultural use, were shipped to other areas of the country at a significant cost to the MWRA. In 2002, the Company was hired to improve the program and set a goal of developing markets locally in New England. The Company sponsored research with the University of Rhode Island to document the superior growth results of the organic pellets versus traditional inorganic fertilizer. Armed with these results, the Company achieved its goal. Today, the Company manages approximately 50% of the MWRA pellets, or 15,000 tons per year, in a profitable program focused on sales to agricultural and turf farms located in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
